This hotel is an excellent choice iSo if you're looking for a place to relax and unwind.
Amanwella sits in a mature coconut grove. It is on a crescent-shaped sandy beach near Tangalle in southern Sri Lanka. The resort's name combines "aman" and "peace" in Sanskrit and Wella, the Sinhalese name for the beach. Geoffrey Bawa's sharp angles from the past century inspired the hotel's distinctive contemporary design.
All suites have access to large terraces and boast Sri Lankan architecture. There are also private plunge pools on the two sides. Moreover, the 150-foot-long pool overlooks ivory sands and is one of the most talked about in the world.
Amanwella's location is unique. It is located on the palm-shaded hillside at a quiet bay. The local fishing community partially shares this bay. Also, to the east, large boulders protect the shoreline. And palm trees rise high above the sandy grove. Despite all the prettiness, this sea is quite rough. It is ideal for those who are more adventurous. Tangalle is located approximately five miles to the east. Local sights include Rekawa's Turtle Beach and Mulkirigala Rock Temple.
Amanwella's design is a triumph for tropical minimalism. Kerry Hill Architects designed it. The design is also a tribute to Geoffrey Bawa's work. Even the position of white frangipani in the garden is a nod to the architect. The resort is built on the natural elevation of the land. It reflects Aman's philosophy for barefoot luxury.
Additionally, a bar and restaurant with swivel windows look directly at the ocean. Besides, freestanding suites are made from local stone and timber. Guests can discreetly see them under a profusion of coconut palms.
Although the service is efficient. The resort has several Butlers who take care of guests in residence and on local sightseeing trips. The main pool is 47 meters long. There are also two spa suites. And just behind the bar is a beautiful library with books and other games.
Amanwella's suites are open to the sounds and sights of Sri Lanka's south coast. They feature floor-to-ceiling sliding doors on either side. These doors allow you to see a curving beach, turquoise ocean, and coconut grove. Moreover, each of the 30 suites at this resort has its terrace and swimming pool. Each suite is also identical in design and layout. They are divided into two types based on location and view.
Modern in design, the suites and ocean suites blend local materials and styles, such as hand-hewn stone walls and terracotta roof tiles. Besides, Suites have openings on both sides, allowing cool sea breezes to enter. The suites are linked by paths and are located along the hillside west of the public areas. The majority of the suites are also easily accessible by foot. Moreover, a small resort vehicle can transport you to higher levels. The views are spectacular, with sweeping views over the ocean and beach.
The restaurant offers fresh catch daily from local fishermen's boats and overlooks the bay. In addition, both the restaurant and Beach Club feature local produce. These include curry leaves, spices, and other seasonal ingredients. The chef also uses these products to create vibrant dishes that can be customized to the guests' preferences.
The restaurant is located at the resort's southern end. It is open for dinner and breakfast. The eight-meter-high location also affords views of the pool and the beach. The cuisine is both Mediterranean and Asian, with a particular emphasis on Indian Ocean seafood.
The Lounge and Bar are adjacent to the restaurant. They also have panoramic views. The terrace is ideal for alfresco dining. The Beach Club is great for lunch or a private dinner. It's also close to the beachfront and surrounded by coconut trees. Besides, room service and daily afternoon tea are available.
The soothing sounds of the waves and the gentle breeze of the coconut palms are available to all visitors to Amanwella. The spa's products are made from ingredients from Sri Lanka's vast array of plants, herbs, and flowers. Amanwella is known for its Abhyanga Massage. It features a traditional warm-oil Ayurvedic treatment to eliminate impurities. Besides, you can do spa treatments in your own private space. The therapy begins with a gentle head massage. This uses long strokes to reach deep inside and an herbal inhalation for cleansing.
The golden-sand beach of Amanwella is perfect for everything. From snorkeling and surfing to whale watching and fishing on the Indian Ocean. The jungled coast is also close by. It contains the cultural riches of Sri Lanka. There are also endless natural treasures like the Yala and Udawalawe National Parks and the Bundala Bird Sanctuary.
Amanwella is just 90 minutes away from the national park. The park has wildlife sightings rival those in the most famous African game reserves. Wild elephants can be seen roaming the grasslands. Kingfishers and hornbills rest in the trees while water buffalo watch the mugger Crocodiles glide gracefully down the river.
Yala is the island's most famous park. Here, leopard spotters can find a large concentration of the elusive big cat. The elephant sanctuary is also a wonderful place to visit. It offers a glimpse of the orphaned young residents, their unsteady legs and wriggling trunks as they walk to their food.
