Blanket Bay is an award-winning luxury hotel on the shores of Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand. With great views of the Southern Alps, this is the perfect place to unwind and have a good time. You will be treated to 5-star service and luxury accommodations from the moment you arrive. Enjoy a romantic getaway or a family vacation here.
Blanket Bay is located outside Glenorchy. This small town is at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu. The village, bordered on both sides by National Parks, is surrounded by glacier-fed rivers, beautiful snow-capped mountains, and forests. Peter Jackson chose this location to film the movie trilogy Lord of the Rings.
Blanket Bay has five lodge rooms, three Lodge Suites in its main Lodge, and four Chalet Suites. Each suite has elegant furnishings and rugs. Besides, all the Lodge's rooms are made from natural materials, reflecting the Lodge's natural surroundings.
Additionally, each room in the Lodge captures breathtaking views of the lake and mountains. You can also enjoy dinner at your table in the Lake View Evening Dining Room. It features a stone fireplace, a beamed ceiling, and a stone fireplace. Moreover, the Wine Cave can accommodate up to six guests and is ideal for private dining.
The Terrace is set under a sunny southern sky. It offers a spectacular view of the lake and mountains. You can also enjoy the swimming pool, horseback riding, and fishing in the Caples and Greenstone rivers. Jet boating, Canoeing on the Dart River, and extensive heli-skiing during the winter.
This hotel sets new standards in New Zealand's outdoor experience. However, it does not allow children younger than ten years old. The Lodge's lower floor houses the spa, which features therapy suites and steam rooms. It also has a hot tub and gym that boasts excellent views of the lake and mountains.
Furthermore, Yumi is a skilled and long-serving therapist who will deliver the perfect therapy for you. You can also book spa therapies in advance.
Blanket Bay is just a 40-minute drive away from Queenstown but only a few minutes drive from Glenorchy Airport. It's challenging to beat the mountain-backed setting on Lake Wakatipu for stunning scenery. Natural beauty is the only thing that surrounds the area. Queenstown is also 45 minutes southeast, and Glenorchy, you can reach there within five minutes.
It's also possible to arrange land and water-based activities within the region. These include hiking on Routeburn and Milford Tracks and horseback riding on Wyuna High Country Station. Additionally, you can cycle into Glenorchy. Finally, enjoy jet boating to Mount Aspiring National Park or fly-fishing along the Greenstone and Caples Rivers.
The main Lodge is down a winding driveway. The area has pastures and sits back from the shore of Lake Superior. It is also surrounded and protected by alpine trees. Although it is a vast, sprawling, dark-wooded maze of rooms with the grand hall at its center, it does not feel high.
This place feels like a family home, with its antique paintings, intricate rug designs, and sculptures. You will also see the lake through the stunning windows in the hall. The armchairs also offer a view of the views. Furthermore, the Den is a cozy bar that offers a relaxing atmosphere with plump couches, wood-paneled walls, and many books.
Guests can rent canoes for trips out to the lake or bikes for the uphill race into town. You can also find the small fitness area on the ground floor. The heated pool is private and only a short distance from the Lodge. Plus, there is a steam room, a whirlpool bath, and a therapy room. You can find joy on rainy days in the game room, which has pool tables, shuffleboard, self-serve bars, and more. Moreover, enjoy a helicopter flight over Milford Sound or horse riding in sheep fields. Free Wi-Fi is also available.
There are only 12 rooms in the hotel, which range from Chalet Suites to Lodge Rooms. The rooms are designed individually while keeping in line with the rustic hunting cabin decor.
As the common areas, woody guest rooms have a sophisticated pioneer decor. They combine natural materials with refined, neutral-toned fabric and unique accessories. At the Lodge, guests have the option to choose from 400-square-foot rooms. Each has a lakefront terrace or balcony. In addition, there are 700-square-foot suites that add sitting areas and walk-in closets.
The Lodge is adjacent to a pair of chalets which contain four more identically sized and well-equipped suites. Guests can combine these to create a double area. Moreover, all rooms have high-quality amenities. These include irons/ironing bars, air-conditioning, minibars, and coffee/tea-making supplies.
Furthermore, breakfast, pre-dinner beverages, dinner, and free access to a self-serve Bar are all included in the room rate. And if you require additional space, you can use the Owner's Residence with two bedrooms and a full kitchen. It also has a two-bedroom studio that is attached.
Guests can enjoy beverages and canapes in the Den from 6 pm to 7pm. During this time, you will learn about the five-course evening menu and choose the wine based on your preferences. You can also dine in the low-lit dining area with a roaring fireplace. There is also the wine cave or the outdoor terrace with breathtaking views of twinkling stars.
Moreover, the menus are deliciously light, even with all five courses, and they change daily. Start with flavorful Portobello mushroom soup with a touch of brandied mascarpone. Then, enjoy mozzarella sprinkled among pecan nuts and some broccoli stems. Breakfast is in a dining room. Your table will also receive the chef's daily pastries.
