The 5-star Hotel Amigo Brussels has a rich historical pedigree spread over 500 years. The historic property used to be a prison in the 1500s. Don't judge just yet. This offering from Rocco Forte Hotels combines award-winning service and a glimpse into Brussels' rich history.
Brussels is well-known for its two culinary delights: beer and chocolate. But the historic city extends beyond these two experiences. There is so much else to do. Along with numerous visit-worthy arts and cultural sites, it also features exquisite buildings and a picturesque square – the Grand Place.
Just around the corner from this square, which has been voted multiple times as the most beautiful square in Europe, is one of Brussels' famous luxury hotels, Hotel Amigo in Brussels.
It all began in 1522 when the property was sold to the city. It used the existing structure as a prison and continued for an extended period. As a result, many believe that its name originated from here. In the 16th Century, some Spanish soldiers misunderstood the word "vrunt" (prison) for vriend, meaning friend, and started calling Amigo, Spanish, for a friend.
Later in the 1950s, the Blanton Family converted the building into a hotel to welcome royalty and visiting nobilities worldwide who came to Brussels for the World's Fair in 1958.
Hotel Amigo Brussels continued as a rather uninspired accommodation until the year 2000, when Rocco Forte Hotels acquired and carefully refurbished it to what it is today. With an extensive renovation, designer Olga Polizzi restored the building to its former glory. Her team worked tirelessly to protect its artistic and cultural heritage and enabled Hotel Amigo Brussels to reclaim its spot as Brussels' best luxury hotel.
The hotel boasts a great location in Brussels' heart, which is the first thing that captivates tourists' attention. With Brussels Airport about twenty minutes drive away, this business hotel serves as a home away from home for many business travelers.
Moreover, it offers numerous opportunities to explore the city as the area has excellent public transportation facilities. For example, you can take a trip to the antique district of le Sablon and its famous Notre-Dame du Sablon church from the Central train station. Besides, you can take a taxi from the hotel forecourt to see the many museums and art galleries. There is also the Royal Palace of Brussels and many business centers around the city.
The area is a financial district in the center of Brussels. The main tourist attractions on this area's cobbled streets include a traditional-style Belgian cafe opposite the hotel, the Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate merely a block away, and the Manneken Pis fountain, a two-minute walk.
Additionally, the resort provides a stylish and central base from which you can explore Brussels' historical heritage and a modern twist.
Looking at the building from the outside, you will never assume it used to be a jail. Instead, you will be ushered inside this Spanish Renaissance yet upscale establishment by an immaculately dressed - top-hat-and-tailed – doormen.
The interior is unfussy and all about modern-day luxury and convenience - this the guests' living experience is entirely different. Olga Polizzi did justice to her name in this respect. Like local fittings, René Magritte prints, and fixtures, her close attention to detail set the Rocco Forte Amigo apart from other international hotels.
The Rocco Forte Hotel Amigo offers a mix of 173 guest rooms and suites. Perhaps the Tintin Suite and Armand Blaton Suite are the most noteworthy.
The former pays tribute to the legendary comic book character and features original illustrations by the Tintin creator Hergé which the Hergé Foundation donates. The latter is named after the founder of the original Hotel Amigo. It features a large private rooftop terrace that overlooks the city.
Each living space here, whether a room or a suite, is state-of-the-art with stylish, artistic touches giving each room a unique appearance. Moreover, all the rooms are soundproof and feature king-sized beds and fully stocked minibars. Additionally, there are in-room flat-screen televisions with satellite connections and Heeley bath products.
They also provide complimentary Wi-Fi access. Guests in higher category rooms also enjoy personalized concierge service and complimentary breakfast. Besides, in-suite check-in and non-alcoholic beverages and drinks are in their in-room bars. Some rooms even offer distinct views of historic buildings and cobblestone streets.
The best thing about Amigo Hotel is its highly professional and trained staff. They'll know you need something even before you realize it yourself. They are very attentive to the guest's needs and make their stay at the hotel exceedingly comfortable.
Being a business hotel, it does not have a spa or pool. However, a well-lit and decently equipped fitness club is accessible 24 hours.
The guests who arrive by car offer valet parking within the hotel premises, while those who come for business can book the luxurious business centers.
How can we talk about Brussels without mentioning food and drink? The culinary offerings on this site include Ristorante Bocconi and the stylish Bar Amigo, the hotel bar.
Ristorante Bocconi is a lively restaurant that serves modern Italian cuisine. Running under the Italian chef Fulvio Pierangelini, this eatery serves finger-licking courses using the freshest produce locally.
While the restaurant may serve delicious meals throughout the day, the intimate place transforms into the hotel's breakfast venue in the mornings. It is a buffet affair that serves a delightful spread.
As for the drinking experience, Bar Amigo is known to serve popular cocktails and martinis. However, you'll be surprised to learn that they also do creative low-calorie variations throughout the day. Here you can also view the signed photographs of famous past guests.
Additionally, Hotel Amigo has hosted many celebrity patrons, including Queen Bey herself. Other famous names include Steven Spielberg, David Bowie, and Harrison Ford.
