Hamburg is a major port city in Germany. The naturally sheltered harbor connects to the North Sea and consists of hundreds of canals crisscrossing vast parkland areas. Surrounded by numerous cafés, the charming and scenic Alster Lake sits on its core. Along its shoreline, you will find the first five-star hotel in Hamburg and its newest location to stay, The Fontenay Hamburg. Combining lakeside luxury with unending ambiance, this luxury hotel is one of the iconic places in Germany.
The hotel is part of The Leading Hotels of the World and is named after John Fontenay. He was a shipbroker who owned the large area of land on which the hotel and Fontenay Street run. The property originally housed the InterContinental hotel, but it had to close down because of bankruptcy in 2013.
In the same year, the builder Klaus-Michael Kühne purchased and demolished it to build the modular structure known as the Fontenay, Hamburg. Originally slated to open in 2016, the hotel opened its doors to welcome guests in March 2018 after multiple delays.
As the architect Jan Störmer visioned it as a 'Hotel in the park,' this leading hotel enjoys an excellent location on the tranquil banks of the Alster. It sits in Rothenbaum, the well-heeled district of the city. The site is ideal not just because of the fantastic lake views but also for being in the center of the town.
Additionally, many noteworthy attractions like the City Hall, Bucerius Kunst Forum, Kunsthalle Museum, and the shopping street Neuer Wall are a few minutes away on foot. Moreover, the property is easily accessible via the Dammtor Station and Stephansplatz U-Bahn. Besides, Hamburg Airport is only 20 minutes drive away.
Perhaps the most notable feature of this leading hotel is its sculptural design. Jan Störmer wanted to make it appear fascinating, so a modular structure that looked like three intertwining circles evolved. The curvy organic shape stands out amidst the neighboring buildings and the beautiful parkland around Alster Lake. Moreover, being some distance from the main city center, it enjoys an exclusively natural atmosphere.
The metal and glass structure features a high-ceiling enclosed atrium and a vast courtyard. There are also floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the interior with natural light. Therefore, guests can enjoy aw-worthy views of the Alster from almost all the rooms.
There is no reception desk. Instead, smaller desks and chairs are available so the guests can sit as they check themselves in or out. Additionally, its interior is decorated with photos captured by Jaschi Klein and artworks by Peruvian artist Antonio Maró.
The Fontenay Hamburg offers its guests a choice between 131 luxurious guest rooms and suites. The most notable are the Alster Suite and the Fontenay Suite. Sitting on the fourth floor, the Alster Suite comprises a large living room and a dining room complete with a dining table seating 10. It also has a fully equipped kitchen and two bedrooms with extra-long beds. The walls are also lined with huge windows offering panoramic views of the lake.
The Fontenay Suite is on the fifth floor. It is the most extensive suite in the hotel, offering mouth-dropping views of both the city and the lake. Like the Alster Suite, it has two bedrooms, a massive dining room, a kitchen, an office area, and a spacious dressing room. In addition, a private spa suite complete with a double-lay bed, whirlpool, sauna, steam room, and television lounge is also present.
The most exciting feature of the living accommodations is their trapezoid shape. Each contains a balcony and floor-to-ceiling windows offering scenic views of the Rotherbaum district. The interior is splendid in warm hues of turquoise, royal blue, light blue, and beige color schemes with gold accents.
They also feature stylish furnishing with oak parquet flooring and decorative pieces from Georg Jensen, a Danish design brand. Moreover, they've thoughtfully added practical elements like a touchpad to adjust lighting and air conditioning and open or close the blinds.
Furthermore, the bathrooms here are rain-shower only, except the Alster and Fontenay suites, whose bathrooms have bathtubs. They are made of natural stone with heated floors, towel rails, and fluffy bathrobes and slippers.
There are three dining options: Parkview, Lakeside, and Atrium Lounge. Parkview is perfect for people looking to enjoy a relaxed garden dining experience. It offers a delicious menu with all-day dining.
Lakeside restaurant is a more contemporary space on the seventh-floor hotel. Under Chef Julian Stowasser, the Michelin Star awarded team serves bold yet enjoyable combinations. Along with upscale dishes and mesmerizing panoramic views, it also serves wine by the glass. It is a must-visit for people who want a unique fine-dining restaurant experience.
Additionally, guests can enjoy their afternoon tea or coffee at the cozy Atrium lounge. They also serve small snacks to go with it.
The only drinking option on the property is the Fontenay bar. It is on the 6th floor. Moreover, visitors can enjoy a 320° panoramic view of Hamburg on the terrace. They serve a variety of drinks along with hearty snacks and unique cakes and coffee.
The cherry on top is its spa, the Fontenay Spa. The vast space includes an indoor-outdoor infinity pool, relaxation areas, and a Finish sauna. There is also an ice fountain and an aroma-quartzite steam room.
They use personalized face and body treatments in separate treatment rooms, such as La Mer products. These treatments are from global cultures, and the staff knows how to administer them expertly.
The Fontenay Hamburg is a five-star hotel in Hamburg with a premium appeal, offering a luxurious living experience. It does not fail to impress with its sculptural architecture and modern amenities. It combines lakeside luxury with a cosmopolitan way of life to enjoy a relaxing atmosphere. So, if you plan to visit Hamburg, don't hesitate to check in here!
