The Samling Hotel

The Samling Hotel sits cradled in a bowl of Lakeland fellside, looking out over panoramic lake views, south along Windermere and west towards the Coniston Old Man mountain range. Here guests enjoy exceptional hospitality and comfort with award-winning fine dining, enhanced by one of the world's best wine lists and delivered with attentive but unobtrusive service. The Samling is the ideal base to explore the most spectacular part of England from the comfort of one of the finest hotels in the Lake District.

Gardens

The 67 private acres contain charmingly characteristic Lake District landscapes, all in one place. The Samling sits cradled in a bowl of Lakeland fellside, looking out over panoramic lake views, south along Windermere and west towards the Coniston Old Man mountain range. It holds a beautifully varied mix of old deciduous woodland, fellside, traditional hay meadows, vegetable gardens, and beehives, and a highly unique ornamental garden featuring ingenious water features interlocking cascading ponds carved from the hillside's bedrock. These channels the local springs under and around the hotel and the lake. Wordsworth had a romantic dalliance by the stream (he enjoyed it so much he wrote a poem).

The woodland is a haven for wildlife and plant species, including swathes of English Bluebells, birds, and surprisingly exotic-looking moths. However, the variety of wildlife has a concentrated interest in the rest of the garden – particularly the vegetable gardens. Sometimes they win, enjoying the gardeners' best efforts demonstrating an adventurous taste for more exotic microgreens than they find in the woods.

The ornamental gardens and water features are particularly intriguing. First, having a listed Georgian stone Summer House that looks along the length of lake Windermere, although the age of the intricately devised water systems is unknown – as they run under the buildings, common sense dictates they were built as part of the plan. The old-fashioned hay meadows provided happy grazing for the bees, housed in hives on the edge of the old orchards, where the deer left their young to shelter in the long grass last Summer. It's a peaceful haven, the man who picked this spot to build The Samling was a man of unfailing discretion, and we're grateful to him.

Rooms

Every consideration for your comfort and relaxation has been lavished on The Samling. A striking gabled Georgian house surrounded by a cluster of old Lakeland stone buildings, the décor complements the original interior and the vernacular buildings' contemporary conversion. A backdrop of stone-shaded neutrals enhances accents of rich colors drawn from the surrounding landscape – the deep indigo blues and greens of the tree-fringed lake to flashes of vivid gold lichen. Every room has its character, but all cosset you with sumptuous yielding comfort and elegant luxury. Most rooms enjoy the elevated lake views South and West. Only two do not overlook the gardens and woodland behind us instead. The Main House accommodates five bedrooms - The Classic Double Frozen Fell - Luxury Doubles, Rydal Water, Grasmere, Thirlmere; and the Junior Suite, Coniston.

To the left of the Main House, facing out over the lake and original water garden, is the first of the converted outbuildings – housing the Classic Double Buttermere and the Suite Blea Tarn, its private patio. These rooms are self-contained and can be used as an interconnecting 2-bedroom suite. They enjoy unimpeded lake views immediately behind but raised into the fell's slope: the Suites Loweswater, Elterwater, Kentmere, and Windermere. Nestled in the corner of these buildings, facing onto the national Trust woodland, is the Classic Double room, Derwent Water. Welcoming children to The Samling over 8 years of age, z-beds in some rooms are provided with a supplement per night. Please enquire about availability at the time of booking.

Suites

Kentmere - Set over three floors, starting with a marble-clad bathroom featuring a generous bath and separate walk-in shower. A short flight of stairs leads to the sitting room flooded with light from its sizeable view-filled window facing out over Windermere; the rooms are decorated in soft neutrals and the rich navy blues of the evening sky. The top-level, open to the original eaves and beams, embraces the bedroom with its super-king-sized bed. This suite can accommodate pets.

Dining

Providing Fine-Dining against an expansive lake view at The Samling Hotel is one of the most memorable dining experiences in the Lake District. In response to the dramatic landscape, Executive Head Chef Robby Jenks is developing and refining menus with a purity of flavor based on each dish's core ingredients. Where possible, these ingredients are from the greenhouse, gardens, and woodland, locally sourced, or the best available in the UK; and they influence Robby's menus seasonally. As a result, highly evolved, straightforward, bold flavors match the grand simplicity of lake and mountain views.

Robby has also introduced the choice to The Samling menus, starting with the three-course Table D'Hote seasonal Lunch Menu. The five-course Tasting Menu is also available, excluding Sundays. On Sundays, a three-course Roast Lunch is served. Most traditional British institutions choose four dishes per course. Afternoon Tea is served daily in the Lounge or Terrace (weather permitting). Freshly made daily in-house selection of savory sandwiches, pastries, and cakes are made or with a glass of Champagne. Dining at The Samling is now about the sense of place.

Experiences

Offering you bespoke personal experiences of life at The Samling. The exceptional award-winning Wine Cellar and meticulously curated bar selection are well worth exploring in depth. Take time with the Sommelier Robert Patla or Beverages Team to learn more about the worlds of fine wine or finest spirits and liquors – and how to sensationally combine them! To satisfy your curiosity or fulfill a dream. We're happy to help. And while you can relax and savor the spectacular view from the hotel, knowing an astounding range of people will help you experience the beautiful and historic Lake District in depth.

Deemed a 'Cultural Landscape' worthy of Unesco World Heritage status, and simultaneously the UK's Adventure Capital, you can be put in touch with people who will show you Prehistoric Stone Circles, sites of Arthurian legend, those famous Daffodils, Turner paintings, and where Peter Rabbit was born. Or, you can ice ax your way along steep mountain 'Edges' with the guidance of the LDNPA's Wintertime Fell Top Assessors. Climb up a series of tumbling waterfalls (having incredible waterfalls) or pootle in a rowing boat on a choice of lakes and meres in the shade of the Temperate Rainforest.

A list of activities as part of your booking confirmation is sent to you, and include full details in your room information on arrival. Take a tour of the world-class literary homes – The Wordsworth Trust at Dove Cottage and Beatrix Potter's Hill Top. Be taken back to the Lakes' violent Border warring past, where King Dunmail's defiant gesture inspired the legend of Excalibur in the face of defeat by the Roman and Scottish armies; and where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner at Lowther Castle (now home to contemporary Dan Pearson Gardens). All were predated by a large and active Prehistoric population who littered the hilltops with Stone Circles and Henges.
